ESPA (Education and Services for People with Autism) is a
specialist college which was set up by parents of children
with autism back in the 1980s and celebrated its 25th
anniversary in July 2014.
In that time we have helped more than 1,400 students
learn new skills and prepared many for independent
living. Today we offer both day college and residential
facilities in Newcastle and Sunderland, catering for young
people aged 16 to 24 from across the autism spectrum.
Working in partnership with Sunderland College and
Barnardo’s, we will be delivering a new, flexible study
programme from September 2015 and are inviting
applications now.
Called Pathways, it offers a choice of four full-time
accredited course programmes which range from entry
level to L2:
- Good Health, Wellbeing and Communication
- Skills for Independence and Community Participation
- Skills for Employment
- Independent Living and Working
Each pathway features:
- Specialist autism specific teaching and learning environments
- Vocational and work preparation
- Independence skills
- Enterprise
- Work placements
- Social leisure and communication
- Functional skills – Maths, English and ICT
Pathways is delivered over three to four days, both at
ESPA and at work based learning facilities at Sunderland
College and Barnardo’s.
We also offer full time courses delivered over five days
per week for students who need more classroom time on
our core curriculum.
