Careers
Our Vision
Every student at ESPA College is supported to develop their vocational and employability skills, knowledge and confidence they need to make informed decisions about their future. Through meaningful opportunities to explore different destinations, students are empowered to recognise their strengths, understand their options and feel prepared to take their next steps into further education, employment or training.
Careers and employability at ESPA College
Excellent careers guidance and meaningful opportunities to develop employability skills are essential in helping young people prepare for their future. By building confidence, developing practical skills and exploring different destinations, students are better equipped to take their next steps into further education, training or employment.
At ESPA College, we are committed to helping every student recognise their strengths, develop their aspirations and achieve their potential. We provide personalised careers guidance and support, enabling students to explore the options available to them and make informed choices about their future.
We recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to careers education. Every student is unique, with their own strengths, interests, aspirations and support needs. Our careers programme is therefore tailored to each individual, ensuring that students have opportunities and experiences that are meaningful and relevant to their personal goals.
Through our careers programme, students have access to a wide range of experiences, opportunities and resources that help them understand the world of work and explore the destinations available to them. This includes workplace experiences, employer engagement, careers education and individual guidance, all designed to build confidence, independence and valuable employability skills.
By taking an individualised approach, we support every student to understand their options, make informed decisions and develop the skills and confidence they need to progress towards a fulfilling future. Whether their next step is further education, training, employment or another pathway, we work alongside each student to help them identify and achieve their own goals.
Aims of the careers programme
At ESPA College, our careers programme is designed to help every student build the skills, knowledge, confidence and experience they need to plan for a successful and fulfilling future.
We aim to:
- Build employability skills that support students to become confident, capable and prepared for the world of work.
- Prepare students for their future by developing practical, vocational and transferable skills that will support them in working life.
- Support informed choices by helping students explore their interests, strengths and the different destinations available to them.
- Provide impartial careers guidance so that every student has access to relevant information, advice and guidance to support their individual plans.
- Create meaningful vocational experiences that give students opportunities to experience different workplaces, industries and employment opportunities.
- Develop confidence and independence by encouraging students to recognise their strengths, build aspirations and take an active role in planning their future.
- Provide a personalised approach because we recognise that there is no one-size-fits-all pathway. Every student has different strengths, aspirations and support needs, and we tailor our careers programme to help each individual achieve their goals.
Careers information, advice and guidance for students
At ESPA College, we recognise that every student has different aspirations, strengths and goals. Nikita Wren, our Employability Coordinator, meets regularly with students to discuss their education and employment goals and provide personalised careers support.
Where appropriate, students can also access one-to-one guidance interviews with a Level 6 qualified Careers Adviser, offering impartial advice tailored to their individual needs and aspirations.

Measuring the impact of the careers programme
At ESPA College, our careers programme is embedded within the curriculum and supported by a range of vocational activities and experiences. We regularly evaluate our careers programme to ensure it meets the needs of our students and informs future development.
We measure impact through:
• Destination data to track student progression.
• Questionnaires and feedback from students, staff, employers and parents/carers.
• Compass evaluations against the Gatsby Benchmarks.
• Work experience and lesson observations.
• Quality audits of vocational and transition profiles and CEIAG.
• Termly employability reviews and curriculum review meetings.
This ongoing evaluation helps us to continually improve our careers programme and ensure it supports students in achieving their future goals.
Destinations and Transition
At ESPA College, we work closely with learners to help them prepare for their next steps and achieve their future goals. We support each learner to identify a pathway that is right for them. After completing their programme of study, learners may progress to:
- Further education or training at a college, university or training provider
- Employment or volunteering
- Supported internships
- Traineeships
- Apprenticeships
- We work with learners, families and our partners to ensure that transition planning is personalised, supportive and focused on each learner’s aspirations.
