What People Say
Chris first came to ESPA in 1996, aged 18, when he started at ESPA College, South Hill, followed by a move into our residential services at Orchard House the following year. Chris has Autism, Learning Disabilities, Epilepsy and Tuberous Sclerosis. He is also non-verbal.
When Chris first joined ESPA he had severe challenging behaviour but over the years our staff team have got to know him well and understand that Chris likes to make choices for himself and feel safe in his environment. His level of incidents is now very low with any fluctuation generally the result of being unwell. Chris’s personality has shone through; he is a pleasant, easy going young man with a good sense of humour and can be quite mischievous!
Chris loves the outdoors, enjoys walks out, bus outings and holidays away and is happiest when doing these things. His Support Plan and Person-Centered Plan reflect his needs, likes and dislikes. Through regular meetings with Chris and consultation with his family we feel that he is content at Orchard and often shows real happiness.
Our son Chris has been supported by ESPA for quite a few years now and we, and more importantly Chris are very happy with the service.
ESPA is a very well-run service that helps young people with autism offering education, support and a better quality of life. Our local authority asked us to look at a long list of homes before they would consider ESPA. We looked at them all, very nice private homes which in reality were a kind of adult crèche.
Young people need a variety of opportunities delivered in a safe organised manner. We feel that ESPA are one of the best providers out there. Going forward Chris needs a level of support and expert care that we believe can only be met by the excellent services on offer within ESPA.
Each year brings improvements and progress. Jane will always be autistic but her personality and strengths shine through. ESPA has empowered her to be herself. You have a team of very dedicated staff, very caring, well trained and knowledgeable people. My family and I are indebted to ESPA for giving Jane a life I never dreamt possible, where she is loved, respected, cared for and kept safe and above all she is happy and well.
